Excellent value. Just don't put too much low end on them. I would suggest bass blockers or using an electronic crossover with a separate amp. 80 Hz is the magic number. Very efficient.

Almost a year to the day I installed the Pyle PLMR62 one of the speakers has blown. Up until then they sounded great. well worth the price if they last more then A year.

I was very suprised with the sound quality of these speakers. For the price, they can't be beat. I have an Alpine 40x2 watt RMS amp powering them. Although it doesn't say in the description, you do get two speakers.

Review by gladbook for Ragtime the Musical (Vocal Score) (Complete): Piano/Vocal (Vocal Score)
Rating:
The other review below (4/27/09) pretty well covered it; this score is nicely engraved and complete. It corrects a lot of mistakes found in the orchestral parts that Music Theatre International uses for its licensed productions. That can lead to some confusion when using this score in rehearsals, but nothing too major. It is almost identical to the engraved piano-vocal score MTI uses, but a little easier to read since it has been more fully edited. Similarly, it includes ALL of the dialogue between songs and over the underscoring, which is great for a rehearsal accompanist.

Probably my only criticism is that there are NO measure numbers anywhere in this score. None. This was the biggest hassle for me using this score in rehearsal. To write them in by hand, I had to compare this edition to the MTI piano-vocal score, because often there were added or dropped measures marked "32, 32A, 32B," etc. Repeats sometimes are counted twice, sometimes not.

Also, since the "Harry Houdini" number was dropped after the Broadway production and eliminated from the licensed version, it has also been removed from this edition. This means all song numbers from Act 2 will be one number off from the conductor's score and orchestra parts. Again, not a huge deal, but something to be aware of for anyone else planning to use this in rehearsal.

You will also not find any of the "alternate key" versions of songs in here. Like the other review said, the appendix does include the alternate reprises of Journey On and Buffalo Nickel, and the alternate ending (as heard on the Broadway cast album) of He Wanted to Say.

I love Ragtime it is my favorite American musical right behind PARADE by Jason Robert Brown. I love having the full vocal score for this show...and the book is great. I beleive it has the complete script in it. Like how an operetta vocal score is set up with pages of music then the lines in between the numbers. Like the Sweeney Todd vocal score.

It's n attractive looking book with a list of instrument doublings and a few black and white photos from the original broadway production. It has an appendix with the London playoff of Buffalo Nickel Photoplay, Inc. and the original Broadway version of He wanted to say the the mini reprise of the theme from Journey On.

It is expertly arranged for Piano/Vocal from the composer's copy rather than the orchestral score. It is arranged for piano with the occasional third line which contains either important solo instruments or another important accompaniment part.

Overall it's a great book and I have no complaints.

Think of this as an update on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Showing up on the heels of the wide success of the "O Brother..." soundtrack and just before the PBS American Roots Music series, this is a worthy collection of samples of the work of contemporary artists working in the earthy music forms from whence it all sprang. From acapella gospel to zydeco with old-time, bluegrass, blues, New Orleans brass and Hawaiian tunes sandwiched in between. What can you say? It's Rounder, for Pete's sake!

Rounder Records has always done an incredible job of putting together compilations and making the music sound alive. This collection celebrates 30 years of Rounder, and is a great overview of the label, as well as a taster for anyone looking to check out some truly alternative music. The mixture is very eclectic; much like American culture, blending and weaving through musical styles. The set features Blues, Folk, Cajun, Bluegrass, Celtic and much more. A highly recommended listening experience.

This book provides parents with valuable information on how to start and follow-through with a child's musical education. The author gives descriptions of the different methods of teaching music (i.e.traditional, Suzuki) as well as explanations of various instruments (age-appropriateness and costs). Advice is also given on how to find the right teacher for your child and how to encourage practice. Resources include music websites, information on various US organizations promoting music education, and recommendations for books and music for children.

Review by Aaron Wolf for Music Lessons: Guide Your Child to Play a Musical Instrument (and Enjoy It!)

As a full time guitar teacher with classical training, my review is this:

This is a great sort of book, that I wish far more parents would read. However, I found it far less specifically useful and less organized than Jessica Baron Turner's book:
Your Musical Child: Inspiring Kids to Play and Sing for Keeps

Furthermore, lots of this sort of advice can be found online and in other books and magazines. "Music Lessons" has a very biased view toward the European orchestra tradition, basically assuming that is the way to go through music education. There is virtually no mention of singing as a dedicated field, very little mention of other world musics or popular music, and the long prose will give you some good advice, but it is not easy to reference and look up specific things later.

There are moments when I really liked the advice, such as emphasizing the variance between students, and emphasizing the need for direct parental involvement. However, there were also moments when I was really turned off by some bold claims or biases, or by the utter ommission of certain ideas or instruments.

I would strongly recommend this over nothing, but if you read only one book, I'd recommend Jessica Baron Turner's first, and then maybe Amy Nathan's second The Young Musician's Survival Guide: Tips from Teens & Pros, and there may be others I haven't reviewed that are also better.

If you are already very classically biased, and like friendly conversational tone, then this book is good for you. Most of the advice is definitely good.
